Lizzie Fletcher’s past work as Representative
In 2018, The 7th Congressional District of Texas experienced a shock. And while it wasn’t an intense earthquake type of shock, it carried the same weight and magnitude as an earthquake. For the first time in nine years, Republican John Culberson lost his seat to Democrat Lizzie Pannill Fletcher. While in office, Representative Fletcher has worked tirelessly for the underrepresented communities in Texas. Some examples of her work for marginalized communities include being a part of multiple caucuses, such as the Black Maternal Health Caucus and the Task Force for Combatting Anti-Semitism. The Representative has also written numerous pieces of legislation, such as Bill H.R. 782, which is titled “Ensuring Women’s Right to Reproductive Freedom Act.”
Lizzie Fletcher’s current work in the Primary Elections
On March 5th, 2024, Fletcher will run for reelection in the primaries against fellow Democrats Pervez Agwan and Noor Mobeen. Although she has an advantage over the other candidates, being an incumbent, the win is not guaranteed. So, she still has to work hard in this election to ensure her win. Some examples of the current work she is doing include delivering holiday cards to senior citizens across her district during the holiday season to show her constituents that she cares.
Futhermore, on January 6th, 2024, she released a statement writing, “Today, as we mark three years since the deadly assault on our Capitol, our Constitution, and our country, we remember and honor the service and sacrifice of the U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement agencies that day and in the days since,” said Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher. “As we mark this day and begin this year, we must maintain our commitment to protecting democracy, the rule of law, and the peaceful transfer of power that are the hallmarks of our American democracy.” The statement made by Fletcher proves her distinctiveness from other politicians. Unlike her colleagues, Fletcher embodies a dedication and commitment to democracy even if it works against her. Fletcher’s statement gives the 7th district of Texas Hope. Hope that politics will eventually be a place where the most vulnerable are protected.
Finally, in the Representative’s own words, a vote for Fletcher is a vote to continue allowing Texas to be a place “where inclusion, innovation, and collaboration thrive.” Let’s hope she is right.
