On January 15th, 2024, Congressman Wesley Hunt went to the Iowa caucus in support of Donald Trump. Trump is arguably most known for his racist comments made toward every group possible. He even managed to make a global pandemic racist, calling the COVID-19 pandemic the “Chinese Virus.” Because of Trump’s reputation, many people were upset that Hunt, an African American man, decided to support Trump. One person in the Iowa caucus even called out from the crowd, “How dare you do this on Martin Luther King Day? How can you turn your back”
The man in the crowd was right. How could Hunt support such a man like Donald Trump, the most racist man in the country? How could Hunt say that Trump “judges people by the content of their character” when so much evidence supports the contrary? The reason comes down to politics. Hunt is a republican running for the 38th District of Texas. And he knows that if he supports Donald Trump, Trump will, in turn, endorse him for Congress. This will give him a guaranteed win.
A second reason for Hunt’s support of Donald Trump is because of the demographics of his district. White, republican Trump supporters make up the majority of the his district. Thus, he knows that if he wants to win over the district, he must also be a Trump supporter. So, even though he may hate Trump, he has to act like he supports him so that his district will support him.
On March 5th, 2024, Texas will hold the primary election. Given Hunt’s support of Trump and thus lack of a backbone, it is evident that he will not be a servant of the people. He will only be a servant of Trump. And is that the type of representative you want?
