On March 5th, 2024, Keith McPhail will be running for representative of Texas’s 2nd District- as a Democrat. Given that the district was designed never to be represented by a Democrat, McPhail is being fearless. Some might even say heroic. The reason McPhail is running for representative is because of his desire to make a difference in Texas.
One of the ways McPhail plans to make a difference in Texas is through cosponsoring the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. The John Lewis Voting Rights Act aims to strengthen and modernize the original Voting Rights Act. McPhail also plans to ensure an automatic voting registration system. Voter registration is a rigorous process. And unfortunately, the group that often hurts the most from this rigorous process are underrepresented minority groups. For instance, many people who belong to minority groups cite the rigorous process of voter registration as the sole reason they do not vote. Thus, by making the voter registration system automatic, McPhail is giving so many more people the opportunity to vote.
Another way McPhail plans to make a difference in Texas is through introducing a Reproductive Freedom Act. This act will decriminalize abortions and other healthcare needs that women face. The reason this act is essential is because it has the power to change the political landscape of Texas drastically. Under McPhail, women no longer have to worry about whether it is legal for them to get an abortion. Doctors no longer have to worry about whether what they are doing is legal or not. But, most importantly, women would have their reproductive rights restored.
On March 5th, 2024, McPhail will be running for the 2nd District of Texas. And given his desire to help people and make Texas a better place, I say he deserves to win.
