Yesterday, Ricardo Rangel was appointed as the new council member of the 2nd district of Texas. The win comes after a year-long battle for democracy with Daisy Campos Rodriguez. Rodriguez argued before the courts that she won the election and received more votes than Rangel. Rangel, on the other hand, argued the opposite. Eventually, the case went to the Texas Supreme Court, where the judge ruled that Rodriguez committed election fraud and that Rangel won the election.
The reason this case is critical is because it showcases the state of our democracy. For the past two years, Rodriguez and many others have tried to change the election by either committing election fraud as Rodriguez did or lying to the public and claiming their opponents committed election fraud. The reason Rodriguez and others have been trying to change elections is that they want to continue staying in power even if that is not what the people want. In other words, they want to be dictators analogous to Hitler and Vladimir Putin. This is clearly an attack on democracy and everything it stands for.
But there is hope. The case of Rangel v Rodriguez shows that the court system will prevent dictators like Rodriguez from taking the throne. Thus, America should not fear the state of democracy just yet. The case also shows that despite all the bad in the world, good still wins.
When asked what this win means to him Rangel said, “It’s hard work, everything’s hard work, but we’re here to work for the community,” Rangel said. “If I have to work extra hours to catch up with the other council members, of course, as long as we’re moving the City of Laredo forward, it’s progress. District II, thank you for waiting because I know it’s been long overdue.”
