Meri L. Gomez is running for the Democratic primary for U.S. Texas Senate; she hopes to represent the entirety of Texas. The filing deadline to run for Texas state senator was December 11, 2023 and only fourteen candidates are running for Texas senator. The Democratic primary election will begin March 5, 2024. Texas, among several other states, uses a primary runoff if no one single candidate reaches a majority vote. A primary runoff between two potential candidates for Texas Senate Democratic candidate is set for May 28, 2024.
The current senators are Ted Cruz (R-TX) and John Cornyn (R-TX). Cruz’ term expires next year, and the senate primary election is running in order to fill his seat in office.
Gomez is one of the many candidates that applied to run for the position. Some of the other possible candidates for Texas Senator are Colin Allred, Mark A Gonzalez, Roland Gutierrez, and Tracy Andrus etc.
How Many Texans Know Senate Candidate Gomez?
On March 5th, 2024, Gomez will run for Texas senator however it seems that she isn’t a widespread or competitive candidate. According to The Texas Politics Project at the University of Texas at Austin, only 8% of respondents in a survey addressing having heard of democratic candidate Gomez said they knew of her. The Project also talked about the respondent’s U.S. Senate Democratic vote choice and Gomez received 3% while the top vote was 28%.
Although these aren’t great percentages there still time for Gomez to populate the minds of Texas for present and future use.
Meri Gomez’s Potential Work as Senator
Gomez has been running for the U.S. Senate since August 2023 but her main work has mostly been related to being an accountant and tax consultant. She believes that her previous experience in tax code is necessary and would work to make her an effective senator. Her public policy issues are focused on tax reform in hopes to help individual taxpayers as well as large corporations. She says she wants to work towards a fairer tax system.
Gomez proposed a new tax law that can change the economy and hopes to do this while in office. By the end of her term at office she wants to fix the tax code and make the economy better than how she had entered it.
