Mayorkas impeachment fails in the United States House of Representatvies yesterday in large part due to Congressman Al Green.
Congressman Green entered the chamber in a wheelchair while still wearing hospital scrubs after leaving a local emergency room.
The 76-year-old’s trip from the emergency room, where he was having abdominal surgery, proved decisive.
House Republicans ultimately failed to impeach Alejandro Mayorkas with the final tally at 216-214.
Green has served in Congress from Texas ninth Congressional District since 2005.
Green asked doctors whether he could leave the hospital momentarily to cast his vote on impeachment. He later had transportation arranged for him by Democratic Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.
After arriving at the Capitol, Mr Green was assessed by an attending physician employed by the House of Representatives.
Green told The New York Times he was determined to cast his vote but did not anticipate how closely divided the House was going to be on the impeachment.
“I didn’t come assuming that my vote was going to make a difference,” Mr Green said. “I came because it was personal.”
The Republican Party may attempt to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security Mayorkas again, but may have an equally uphill climb.
The Mayorkas vote was the first of two that went against Speaker Mike Johnson.
There is already rumor that he may face a Motion to Vacate the Chair which can be brought by a single member under current House Rules. This was the means by which the Republican Party removed Kevin McCarthy.
It is possible that his leadership will come under increasing fire given his inability to lead his caucus.
Additionally, Tom Suozzi is running to replace disgraced Congressman George Santos in New York. If that seats flip to Suozzi, it would mean a tight GOP majority is even more razor thin.
