Two weeks ago, councilmember John Courage announced that he would be running for mayor of San Antonio. During his announcement, pro-Palestinian protesters shouted and screamed at the council member for a cease-fire. This was in reference to the Israel and Gaza conflict. Courage, having taken part in protests during his youth, responded by saying, “Allow them to say what they want, they have the freedom of speech…they have the right to say their piece, and they’re very passionate about that,” This comment’s celebration of the people’s freedom of speech is not only indicative of the type of mayor he will be but of the type of councilmember he is now.
As a council member, he has fought vigorously for “access and accountability in our higher education system and helped create Palo Alto Community College to expand higher education opportunities to an area of the city that lacked them.” In other words, he fought for the freedom of individuals to achieve higher education no matter what city they live in. The reason this is important is because education is the great equalizer that defines the way someone lives their life.
During his time as councilmember, Courage also advocated against a bill that prohibited transgender individuals from sports. He stated that this bill was created by state politicians who prioritize winning over the people. Courage, on the other hand, is no politician and firmly believes in an individual’s right to play sports no matter how they choose to identify themselves.
In 2025, John Courage will be running for Mayor of San Antonio. And given his proven record of fighting for the people’s rights, I say he deserves your vote.
