A billion dollar fight in coming to Texas over taxpayer funded private schools per State Representative Mihaela Plesa.
Mihaela Plesa‘s comments came in an interview with CBS’s Jack Fink. She represents the Dallas area 70th District in Plano, Texas.
Earlier this week, the Texas House and Senate released their proposed budgets for 2026 and 2027. A large part of the budget includes money for private school education at taxpayer expense.
Specifically there is $1 billion proposed in each chamber’s budget for taxpayer-funded education savings accounts so students can attend private school.
When Plesa was a child she attended Brinker Elementary in Plano ISD.
At the time, the state was funding more than 50% of the cost of public education and that is now a billion dollar fight.
Texas has not fully funded our public schools for almost two decades and in the state that boasts the ninth largest economy in the world — that is unacceptable. Texas currently funds 77% the rate of the national average.
Plesa says “we have a responsibility and constitutional duty to ensure all of the five million children in Texas receive a world class education from highly skilled teachers in a safe learning environment with all the books, technology, and supplies they need.”
Schools will have more resources to secure lab equipment, modernize their technology, reduce class sizes, provide mental health support, better special education services, and more! When the state increases its share of public education funding, our property taxes go down.
